Arabian Nights Entertainments

BACKGROUND
[A collection of popular tales assembled over many centuries and well known in Europe
since the 18thC. Contains : Aladdin, Ali Baba, Sinbad the Sailor
Earliest parts seem to date from 8thC.
The framing story in which the tales are set concerns Scheherazade]

EUROPE
Introduced by Antoine Galland in "Mille et une nuits"
(1704-17 France)
Galland's text remained standard until the mid-19thC but later versions owe more an
Egyptian translation published in Cairo in 1835.
Galland's version was translated into English by an unknown hack writer and the stories
were sold as Chapbooks from 1706 onwards. Sinbad appeared in 1712 and Aladdin
and Ali Baba from 1721-2.
