Laurence Sterne

Male : Novelist, Traveller and humorist. A born philanderer, he married Elizabeth Lumley in 1741 and it was an unhappy union. Led a wandering, unconventional life and died in poverty. Although buried in London his remains were interred in 1969 and reburied at Coxwold in Yorkshire

Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman
[Described by Sterne as a "cock and bull" story it rambles through the life of the hero with the
author contantly suggesting the impossibility of telling the story, or finishing it.
It ran to nine volumes and was left unfinished at his death. He offered the first two volumes
to a York bookseller for £50 but was refused so took them to Dodsley in London]
